Missouri American Water is undertaking two large water main replacement projects on Sappington Rd. and Berry Rd. in Glendale over the next year. Check this page for updates on project scheduling, road closures and other information.

N. Berry Water Main Repair

Project Start Date: March 30, 2026
Estimated Completion: November–December 2026

Missouri American Water will begin the N. Berry Road Water Main Replacement Project in late March 2026. This infrastructure improvement project is being coordinated with St. Louis County and the City of Glendale to improve water system reliability and prepare the corridor for future roadway improvements.

Project Purpose and Background

The project area extends along N. Berry Road, between Gramercy Place and W. Lockwood Avenue. Currently, three cast iron water mains run parallel beneath N. Berry Road: a 20-inch main installed in 1935, a 12-inch main installed in 1923, and a 4-inch main installed in 1915. Each line has experienced multiple breaks, with an increase in failures in recent months, resulting in water service interruptions and, in some cases, property flooding.

To address these issues, Missouri American Water will install a new 24-inch ductile iron water main to replace and consolidate the existing system. Once the new main is in service, the three older mains will be taken out of service.

This reconfiguration will increase system reliability, reduce the likelihood of emergency repairs, and support future roadway improvements.

Construction Overview

Supervising Agency: Missouri American Water

Construction will be completed in phases along N. Berry Road. Work will require full roadway closures within active work zones for excavation, pipe installation, and service connections. All disturbed areas will be temporarily restored during construction and permanently restored upon project completion.

Schedule

March–November/December 2026

Work hours are expected to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekend or extended hours may be used if necessary to meet the schedule or restore service connections.

Traffic and Access Impacts

Beginning the week of March 30, 2026, N. Berry Road will be closed to all traffic from Gramercy Place to Big Bend Boulevard as Missouri American Water Company Crews begin water main replacement work. The work will begin near Gramercy Place and proceed south until complete. This road closure will cause detour routes to be in effect. Missouri American Water will begin posting warning signs, detour routes, etc. during the week of March 16, 2026. Missouri American Water anticipates that the closure will remain in place for 4-6 months.

Motorists traveling between I-44 and Manchester Road are encouraged to use the detour route via W. Lockwood Avenue, N. Sappington Road, and W. Kirkham Avenue. Access to all homes and driveways will be maintained. Short-term driveway restrictions may occur when work is directly in front of a property, but crews will notify residents in advance and restore access as quickly as possible.

Pedestrian and School Access

The City of Glendale, the staff of Mary, Queen of Peace, and the Kirkwood School District are working closely to increase awareness of the potential for the increase of traffic near both school campuses, especially during arrival and dismissal times on school days. Glendale Police will have an increased presence in the area during these times. We ask for the cooperation of all motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in staying alert for the additional traffic and following the directions of posted traffic control (signs and crosswalk attendants).

Remember:

  • Stay alert: Pay attention to flaggers, workers, and equipment, and be prepared for sudden stops.
  • Slow down: Follow all posted speed limits and adjust for traffic flows and weather conditions.
  • Give yourself some space: Leave at least two seconds of braking room between other vehicles.

Water Service Impacts

No long-term water outages are anticipated. Individual service transfers may require brief interruptions lasting less than one hour. Affected residents will receive advance notice of any temporary service disruption via door hangers or direct communication.

Customers who are not opted in to receive general alerts from Missouri American Water can do so through their MyWater account at www.missouriamwater.com or by calling 1-866-430-0820. You can report water related emergencies via the Missouri American Water website or in your MyWater account. Not a direct customer and still want to be notified? Sign up for Missouri American Water's CodeRED to receive water-related alerts. Text WATER to 99411 or visit AWCodeRed.com.

STEP 1: Log in to or sign up for MyWater at amwater.com/mywater.
STEP 2: Click the Edit Info button.
STEP 3: Click the Change button under Alert Settings.
Note: Standard text, data and phone rates may apply.

Residents may notice temporary water discoloration caused by harmless sediment after transfer work is complete. Running cold water for a few minutes typically clears the line.

Restoration and Cleanup

All disturbed pavement, curb, and lawn areas will be restored following completion of the work. Temporary asphalt patches will remain in place until final surface restoration occurs in coordination with the St. Louis County Highway Department. The project area will be cleaned and returned to its pre-construction condition.

Thank You for Your Patience

Once completed, the upgraded water system will provide greater reliability, improved water quality, and long-term service stability for residents along N. Berry Road.

N. Sappington Water Main Repair

Estimated Project Start Date: November 3, 2025
Estimated Completion: March 30, 2026

Missouri American Water will begin the N. Sappington Rd Water Main Replacement Project on Monday, November 3, 2025. This infrastructure improvement project is being coordinated with the upcoming N. Sappington Rd Preservation Project to ensure that water system upgrades are completed before roadway preservation work begins.

Project Purpose and Background

The project area extends along N. Sappington Rd between Manchester Rd and Lockwood Ave. Beneath the southbound lane, two separate water mains currently serve residents in this area. The first is a 20-inch main installed in 2004, which has performed reliably with no recorded breaks since installation. The second is a 6-inch cast-iron main installed in 1912, which has experienced repeated breaks over the years, particularly in recent months.

To eliminate the aging 6-inch main and prevent future service disruptions, Missouri American Water will transfer 66 residential water service lines and 11 side street connections from the 6-inch main to the 20-inch main. Once all transfers are complete, the 6-inch main will be de-energized, capped, and left in place to minimize additional surface disturbance.

This reconfiguration will increase system reliability, reduce the likelihood of emergency repairs, and prepare the area for future roadway improvements.

Construction Overview

Contractors: CIP Utilities and Bommarito Construction
Supervising Agency: Missouri American Water

Two construction crews will work concurrently along the corridor. One crew will begin at N. Sappington Rd and Manchester Rd, progressing southward, while the second crew will begin near N. Sappington Rd and Dwyer Ave, also moving south.

Work will primarily occur within the southbound lane of N. Sappington Rd, including the adjoining sidewalks. Excavation will be limited to small, localized areas where service line transfers occur. Each excavation will be backfilled and temporarily patched to maintain access and safety. Permanent curb and sidewalk restorations will occur after transfers are complete.

Schedule

November–December 2025: Residential service line transfers
January–March 2026: Side-street connection transfers
Final completion: March 30, 2026 (weather permitting)

Work hours are expected to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekend or extended hours may be used if necessary to meet the schedule or restore service connections.

Traffic and Access Impacts

N. Sappington Rd will remain open to traffic for the duration of the project. However, lane restrictions and flagging operations will be in place when crews are working. Motorists should expect intermittent delays and are encouraged to allow extra travel time through the area.

Access to all homes and driveways will be maintained. Short-term driveway restrictions may occur when work is directly in front of a property, but crews will notify affected residents in advance and will restore access as quickly as possible.

Pedestrian and School Access

Missouri American Water has coordinated with the City of Glendale to ensure that sidewalks remain open and accessible throughout the project. Temporary pedestrian detours may be implemented at specific work zones, but signage will direct pedestrians safely around the area.

Because several public and private schools are located along N. Sappington Rd, crews will take special care to maintain safe routes during school hours. Coordination with construction crews will continue throughout the project to minimize impacts during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Water Service Impacts

No long-term water outages are anticipated. Individual service transfers may require brief interruptions lasting less than one hour. Affected residents will receive advance notice of any temporary service disruption via door hangers or direct communication from Missouri American Water. Customers who are not opted-in to receive general alerts from Missouri American Water can do so through their My Water account by visiting www.missouriamwater.com.

After transfer work is complete, residents may notice slight temporary water discoloration caused by harmless sediment. Running cold water for a few minutes typically clears the line.

Restoration and Cleanup

All disturbed pavement, curb, and lawn areas will be restored following completion of the work. Temporary asphalt patches will remain in place until final surface restoration occurs in coordination with the N. Sappington Rd Preservation Project. The project area will be cleaned and returned to its pre-construction condition.

Community Communication
