Shown in red, the cities of Glendale and Kirkwood have partnered on a federally funded grant to make improvements to E. Essex Ave, scheduled for 2022. E. Essex Ave will be reconstructed with new concrete curb and guttering the length of the road from N. Sappington Rd to the Glendale/Kirkwood city limit line with new concrete sidewalks on the north side of the street. The street itself will be resurfaced with asphalt. The new sidewalks will continue westward into Kirkwood, ending at Dickson St.
Shown in black, the city plans to make stormwater improvements to E. Essex Ave from N. Sappington Rd head east to Moreland Ave and south along a portion of Edwin Ave. This stretch of E. Essex contains many stormwater issues including a severe slope along the south side of the street near Edwin Ave. this work is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2020, ending in the spring of 2021, weather permitting.
The city has also recently submitted another application for federal funding to make minor repairs, replace deteriorated crosswalks, and resurface N. Sappington Rd from Manchester Rd to Lockwood Ave. Grant notifications will be made in the fall of 2020 and, if awarded, work along N. Sappington Rd would take place in 2024.
