The Glendale Police Department would like to alert residents of the City of Glendale and the entire St. Louis Metropolitan area of a common scam that usually takes place during “Spring Break” each year.
Criminals will call unsuspecting parents or grandparents and advise them that their child or grandchild has been arrested while out of town on spring break. These con-artists will act as if they are law enforcement officials or criminal attorneys. They usually ask that money be wired to a specific address for bond or to get their loved one out of jail but recently they have been asking for the purchase of monetary gift card to cover the bond or court costs. At times they will even act as if they are the family member needing assistance over the telephone.
If you received a similar telephone call, be very suspicious. Attorneys or law enforcement officials normally do not make telephone calls requesting bond or court costs. They also never ask for payment in the way of gift cards. If you receive a telephone call requesting money in this way, call the family member they are insinuating immediately. You will usually find that they are not even out of town and they are not in jail.
If you fall victim to this type of scam, notify your local police department immediately.
